Another general phrase used by magicians like (abracadabra or voila) spoken to imply that some sort of change has happened or is about to happen.
Etymology of "Hocus Pocus"
There are many different theories on where the phrase "Hocus Pocus" came from -- here are a few of the more popular ideas:
- Some say the phrase is a play off the Latin "hoc est corpus" ("here is my body"); early magicians poking fun and imitating priests.
"Hoc est Corpus" being a phrase used in the Communion (Eucharist) ceremony by Christians -- specifically Catholics.
- Another theory is the phrase is based upon the name Ochus Bochus, a figure from Norse Mythology who was believed to be a powerful demonic sorcerer.
- The Welsh phrase "Hovea Pwca" is also said to be a possible source for the phrase to originate from. "Pwca" also known as "Pooka, Púca, Phooka" being a feared creature of Celtic Folklore. The name related to the popular mythological beast "Puck".
